Terrazzo is a plaster for decorative seamless flooring that offers a completely eco-friendly, 0-VOC alternative to Portland cement. It can be used alone or mixed with aggregates to create stunning Terrazzo floors with thicknesses ranging from 5mm to 2 cm, depending on the size of the chosen marble chips. The two-component product is made from an innovative mineral binder found naturally in nature, resulting in a smooth paste that is highly adaptable and can be mixed with various aggregates, such as marble or glass. The dried material has an authentic, natural appearance with a base color of white and an ivory hue, which can be tinted with colorant pigments or marble powders to achieve the desired shade.
Terrazzo is unique for its complete mineral composition, high mechanical strength (6 times stronger than cement-based Terrazzo), and natural antistatic and antibacterial properties, making it an excellent option for seamless interior flooring. Suitable for high-traffic commercial areas or residential spaces, Terrazzo is not recommended for outdoor use as it cannot tolerate rising humidity. Terrazzo does not shrink as it cures and offers impressive flexibility, preventing any risk of cracking. The application process is straightforward, requiring just a single coat and reaches completion in a mere 36 hours. Tools are easy to clean.

What is Terrazzo?
Terrazzo is a non-hydraulic cement made of high-performance mineral compounds found abundantly in nature, providing an eco-friendly alternative to Portland cement. It can be used alone or mixed with aggregates to create stunning Terrazzo floors with a minimum thickness of 6mm. The two-component product is made from oxides mixed with a solution of salts, resulting in a smooth paste that is highly adaptable and can be mixed with various aggregates such as marble or glass. The dried material is white with an ivory hue and can be tinted with colorant pigments or marble aggregates to achieve the desired shade.
What is a Terrazzo Floor?
A classic Terrazzo floor is a type of seamless flooring featuring marble aggregates with a diameter of up to 40mm, bound together by lime or Portland cement. Terrazzo is manufactured entirely on-site, resulting in a remarkable continuous surface without joints or gaps. Venetian Terrazzo is a unique work of art with its own hues, mosaics, and colored glass. Each Terrazzo floor is unique and cannot be reproduced identically. This flooring method is applied on various foundations, including traditional screeds made of sand and cement or existing floors of all kinds. Once the screed is prepared and leveled, marble granules are scattered, beaten, polished, coated in linseed oil, and finally waxed.
The three Terrazzo binders compared
Advantages of Terrazzo
Terrazzo is composed of natural oxides and salts, making it a non-hydraulic cement with many superior properties compared to ordinary Portland cement. It does not require wet curing, has fireproof properties, excellent abrasion resistance, and can withstand a compressive force of 10,000 – 12,000 psi (69 – 83 MPa). Additionally, it has good elasticity, increasing its ability to resist shocks. In addition to its high resistance, Terrazzo has a natural resistance to grease and is highly breathable, preventing vapor barriers that cause condensation and mold.
Benefits of Eco Terrazzo as a terrazzo binder
Terrazzo offers several advantages over Portland cement as a binder for Terrazzo floors. It does not shrink during drying and even expands by 0.2-0.3% during curing, preventing cracks and allowing for thinner floors. Terrazzo floors can be as thin as 6mm, while Portland cement-based Terrazzo must be at least 50-70mm thick, reducing material consumption and costs. The lack of cracking enables seamless application without divider strips, unlike Portland cement Terrazzo, which must be applied in sections. Terrazzo is also exceptionally hard and dries quickly, taking only 24 hours.
While many modern Terrazzo floors use epoxy resin, which tends to yellow over time and has a synthetic appearance, Terrazzo is a completely natural, mineral material that maintains the natural look and durability of classic Terrazzo floors made with Portland cement or lime. Terrazzo floors retain their beauty and aesthetic value for many decades.
Eco-Friendly Choice: Terrazzo is a 0-VOC, naturally occurring mineral. It is carbon neutral, absorbing carbon dioxide during its life as a plaster, equal to the amount produced during manufacture. Additionally, Terrazzo finishes can be naturally protected with treatments like linseed oil and mineral waxes.
History of Terrazzo Floors
Origins: The Venetian Terrazzo floor dates back to ancient Greece, gaining notoriety in Italy through Roman dominion. Initially, the beaten floor was ground terracotta mixed with lime, often not sanded, allowing normal use to highlight the grain size.
Venice Flourishing: In mid-16th century Venice, marble was widely used, and resourceful Venetian marble workers began reusing marble remnants to build terraces. Techniques progressed from hand-rubbing stones to using long-handled, weighted grinding stones. Inserting marble fragments increased wear resistance.
Modern Developments: Today, marble additives in Terrazzo vary from fine to medium grain. Coarser grains were used in the 19th century, with finer grains and Art Nouveau decorations in the 20th century. Hydraulic lime is still used, though controlled-shrinkage Portland cement is often used for economic reasons. Terrazzo tiles in 20×20 cm formats have been introduced, increasing diffusion but some argue debasing the handmade aspect.
Where Can Terrazzo Floors Be Used?
Venetian Terrazzo suits any interior design, whether classical, modern, or contemporary. Unlike mosaic, Terrazzo creates a smooth, seamless surface that adds warmth and softness to any room, shining like an endless carpet of light.

Surface protection of the flooring must be carried out with products provided by the Stucco Wall line before putting into service.
APPLICATION:
Choosing the Aggregates: When working with cement-based Terrazzos, it's crucial to fill the entire granulometric curve. On the contrary, with Terrazzo, there's no need for a specific granulometric distribution. You have the option to use only large marble grains, leaving gaps between them without aggregates. But remember, the coating's thickness will be set by the size of the largest marble piece. So, it's vital to pre-calculate the material consumption based on your selected marble size.
To achieve the desired finish, you can use marbles of different sizes and colours. Fine powders (0-0.5 mm) can be used to add colour to the Terrazzo base, which would otherwise have an ivory hue. Indeed, there are two ways to colour the base: you can use liquid pigments, or use natural, fine stone powders to create depth in the finish.
